Athyrium niponicum var pictum AGM The classic silver shield fern. This by division from a highly silvered plant with a good red stipe, originally from Washfield. Deciduous. £3.50

Athyrium vidalii Another Japanese fern with coloured fronds. Red flushed new growth on this deciduous fern for moisture retentive soil in shade. £3.50

BLECHNUM (Blechnaceae)
Blechnum chilense AGM Always sells out far too quickly, needs acid soil and not too cold a spot, but big and majestic when happy. Availability will depend on season. £6.00
Blechnum penna-marina subsp. alpinum Short fronded form of this creeping fern. Bronze to pink new fronds all through the growing season. £3.50
Blechnum penna-marina subsp. alpinum ‘Cristatum’ A fine crested form. £3.50
Blechnum penna-marina subsp. penna-marina AGM Creeping dark green fronded fern. Easy ground cover for shade. £3.50
Blechnum spicant AGM Native ladder fern, needs neutral to acid soil, to 12” tall. Popular with flower arrangers. £3.50


CYRTOMIUM (Dryopteridaceae)
Cyrtomium falcatum AGM Dark evergreen pinnae, very good for flower arranging, quite distinct form. Not for the coldest spot.

Cyrtomium fortunei AGM Hardier than the above, an easier evergreen with narrower pinnae. To 18” tall. £3.50
Cyrtomium macrophyllum Similar to the above species but with broader spreading habit and pinnae. £3.50


DENNSTAEDTIA (Dennstaedtiaceae)
Dennstaedtia punctilobula The hay scented fern, quite common in North America. Pale green fronds, quite vigorous so not really for small gardens, but lovely for ground cover particularly difficult areas. £3.50

DICKSONIA (Dicksoniaceae)
Dicksonia antarctica AGM The hardiest of the tree ferns. These are in one litre pots and will start forming trunks in a couple of years. Worth a trial if you have a sheltered moist spot such as a north east/ west border on a house. £5.00

DOODIA (Blechnaceae)
Doodia media Evergreen fern from New Zealand, hardy (just) with bright red new fronds giving quite a startling colour effect. £4.00

DRYOPTERIS (Dryopteridaceae)
Dryopteris generally are easy good garden plants hardy throughout most of the U.K. Most (with the exception of D. wallichiana) don't mind soil pH. The main difference between D. affinis and D. filix-mas from a garden point of view is that affinis is nearly evergreen, whereas filix-mas withers as soon as the winter frosts begin. I have avoided the subsp and hybrid renaming at the moment but it will come.
Dryopteris affinis ‘Cristata Angustata' AGM Narrow fronds crisped at the edges. Forms a good shuttlecock shape quite quickly.

Dryopteris affinis 'Crispa Gracilis’ AGM A short form of the native golden-scale fern, but as its name suggests has crisped and crested fronds. It grows very easily neatly and reaches approximately 12" tall. 1 litre deep pots. Semi-evergreen. £3.50
Dryopteris affinis ‘Cristata’ AGM Narrow fronded form with crests on the side and terminal pinnae. A very elegant fern. Semi-evergreen to 3’ tall. £4.00
Dryopteris affinis 'Cristata’ The King Fern A magnificent fern with splendid crests and arching fronds, said to be the "King of the British Ferns". To 4' tall. Very effective in a pot against a north facing wall. 1 litre deep pots. Semi-evergreen. £3.50
Dryopteris affinis 'Pinderi' Fronds narrow and upright forming a classic shuttlecock shape. Semi-evergreen. £3.50
Dryopteris affinis 'Stableri' Narrow fronds very similar if not identical to the last. £3.50
Dryopteris x australis Sterile and rare and really quite striking. A hybrid that forms a upright shiny shuttlecock of fronds. £5.00
Dryopteris carthusiana A slightly coarse good doer for general planting in the garden or landcape, with mid green toothed fronds. £3.50
Dryopteris championii Another Japanese species with pale green new fronds aging to dark green. Shiny and very weather resistant, to 18’’ high slowly creeping. £5.00
Dryopteris clintoniana Quite a distinct species with evergreen bi-pinnate leathery sage green frond to 18" long. Quite hardy and tough but some shade would be appreciated. 1 litre deep pots. Deciduous. £3.50
Dryopteris crassirhizoma A lovely fern with dark scaled stipes not unlike D. wallichiana but with squarer pinnules and fresh green look, deciduous. £5.00
Dryopteris cristata One of the rarest British ferns. For a moist situation, not crested as the name would indicate. £3.50
Dryopteris cycadina AGM Lovely fern with black hairs on the back of the stipe and bold dark green foliage to 3' eventually. New fronds uncurl like an elephant's trunk. Semi-evergreen. £3.50
Dryopteris dilatata 'Crispa Whiteside' AGM D.dilatata is the common woodland fern around here but this is much paler golden green, crisped and congested. A very attractive fern. Semi-evergreen to 2 feet high. £3.50
Dryopteris dilatata 'Grandiceps' A heavily crested form of the native broad buckler fern. Easy and very tolerant. 
1 litre deep pots. Semi-evergreen. £4.50
Dryopteris dilatata 'Lepidota Cristata' AGM Crested and very finely cut fronds. 1 litre deep pots. Semi-evergreen. £3.50
Dropteris dilatata ‘Recurvata’ A form with the pinnules recurved round. An attractive variety. £4.50
Dryopteris erythrosora AGM Quite one of the best garden ferns with bronze new fronds all Summer. Will tolerate a fair amount of alkalinity in the soil but prefers neutral to acid soils. 3' tall. 1 litre deep pots. Evergreen. £3.50
Dryopteris erythrosora ‘Brilliance’ A North American cultivar in which the new fronds are said to be brighter and deeper in colour. £5.00
Dryopteris erythrosora var. prolifica AGM Handsome dwarf form which is a bit more crisped than the species and forms bulbils in the vein axils. Bronze new growth all Summer. To 12" tall. Very good in a shady rock garden. 1 litre deep pots. Evergreen. £4.00
Dryopteris filix-mas 'Barnesii' Interesting form with narrow fronds and the pinnae having a serrated edge and slightly crisped look. A fine garden fern. 1 litre deep pots. Deciduous. £3.50
Dryopteris filix-mas 'Crispa Cristata' Dwarf form to 12" tall with overlapping crisped pinnae with small terminal and side crests. 1 litre deep pots. Deciduous. £3.50

Dryopteris filix-mas 'Depauperata' Pinnae reduced almost just the mid-ribs. Once sori develop on established plants it has a wonderful lacy look. Very dark green colour. 1 litre deep pots. Deciduous. £3.50
Dryopteris filix-mas 'Euxinensis' Rare form with flat neat undivided light green side pinnae and a long terminal crest.

Dryopteris filix-mas 'Grandiceps Martindale' A nice variety with a pair of large terminal crests. 1 litre deep pots. Deciduous. £4.50
Dryopteris filix-mas 'Linearis' Pinnae reduced almost to ribs, not as dramatically so as 'Depauperata'. Has an open lacy look about it. Deciduous. £3.50 
Dryopteris filix-mas 'Linearis Polydactyla' Pinnae reduced to ribs with long terminal crests on this graceful open fern. To 3' tall eventually. Most offered in the trade are not true but inferior forms. 1 litre deep pots. Deciduous. £3.50 
Dryopteris filix-mas ‘Parsley’ A North American cultivar with very crested congested fronds which look like … £4.00
Dryopteris goldieana The giant wood fern of North America. To 4' x 4' in damp woodland conditions. Highly decorative when the new fronds appear in Spring. Deciduous. £3.50
Dryopteris marginalis Robust large North American fern somewhat similar to D. goldieana. In North America this is the common fern you see. £3.50
Dryopteris sieboldii This unusual Japanese fern has a long terminal uncut terminal pinnae some 8-12" in length and two or three pairs of uncut side pinnae. It is quite glaucous-green in colour and prefers a humus rich soil and protection from strong winds. Evergreen, 2' tall. £4.00
Dryopteris stewartii Another Himalayan species with open cut dark green fronds. To 2’ high deciduous. £3.50
Dryopteris tokyoensis Bold pale greeny-yellow pinnate fronds held upright. One of the most elegant ferns with a narrow upright shuttlecock shape. £4.50 
Dryopteris uniformis A very elegant fern with yellow new fronds lightly cut, recurving outwards. £4.00
Dryopteris wallichiana AGM A most magnificent fern from the Himalayas and Japan. The young unfolding fronds are a golden green in the Spring contrasting well with the hairy black midrib and stems. Evergreen. £3.50

GYMNOCARPIUM (Woodsiaceae)
Both are Somerset natives, G. dryopteris on acid soils and G. robertianum on alkaline.
Gymnocarpium dryopteris AGM The native oak fern, a running carpeter. This is a robust form up to 12 “ tall. £3.50
Gynocarpium dryopteris subsp ‘Plumosum’ AGM Broader and more elegant form of this attractive fern. £3.50
Gymoncarpium robertianum Larger growing than above and much happier on chalky soils. £3.50

MATTEUCCIA (Woodsiaceae)
Matteuccia orientalis A rare variety with sterile fronds which come up and out almost touching the ground with fertile fronds in the centre. Needs shade and is best not exposed to frosty pockets. 
2 litre pots. Deciduous. £4.50
Matteuccia struthiopteris AGM The shuttlecock fern, vigorous and striking. Needs some moisture to reach full size. 1 litre deep pots. Deciduous. £3.50
Matteuccia struthiopteris ‘Jumbo’ Giant growing form of shuttlecock fern. £4.50

ONOCLEA (Woodsiaceae)
Onoclea sensibilis AGM The sensitive fern, ideal for a moist situation where it can be allowed to spread.
2 litre pots. Deciduous. £4.00

OSMUNDA (Osmundiaceae)
Osmunda cinnamomea AGM Separate fertile fronds on this fine royal fern. Slow to develop but makes a very fine plant. Deciduous. £4.50
Osmunda claytoniana AGM The interrupted fern is a slow grower but eventually makes a large plant. 'Interrupted' in that the fertile fronds have pinnae either side of the reduced fertile pinnules. Deciduous. £4.50
Osmunda japonica Closely related to O.regalis but more open with bronze spring foliage colour. £4.00
Osmunda regalis AGM The Royal Fern will tolerate normal soils in shade but really moisture is needed to allow the plant to develop properly. 1 litre pots. Deciduous. £3.50
Osmunda regalis ‘Cristata’ AGM Crested form of the royal fern, tends to be shorter and better for the smaller garden £3.50
Osmunda regalis 'Purpurascens’ A more colourful form with purple flushed croziers in Spring and purple frond stems all Summer, excellent Autumn colour as well. 1 litre pots. Deciduous. £3.50
Osmunda regalis ‘Southern Form’ We imported these as tissue cultured plugs in the hope of securing some of these giant royal ferns, time will tell how they do in the UK. £4.00
Osmunda regalis var spectabilis The North American form of our native fern, taller and a bit more open, with smaller pinnules. Reminiscent of the Japanese species/forms. £4.50

PELLAEA (Adiantaceae)
Pellaea rotundifolia AGM Creeping fern with fronds of rounded glossy green pinnae. Not the hardiest, may need a sheltered site. £3.50


POLYPODIUM (Polypodiaceae)
All evergreen, these in the main will be open ground divisions from our clumps. Many more will be offered in the future when they get large enough. If you want something in particular we may be able to spare a division.
Polypodium cambricum syn P.australe Autumn/Winter growing species with broad fronds. £4.00
Polypodium glycyrrhiza ‘Longicaudatum’ AGM A form with a long drawn out tip to the fronds. Slowly spreads to form a clump. £4.00
Polypodium interjectum 'Cornubiense' AGM Large fronded cultivar which tends to form a variety of foliage types, easy and tough. £4.50
Polypodium vulgare 'Bifidomultifidum' Crested form of the native polypody, good ground cover particularly for dry shade. In common with other species looks best in Winter. £3.50

POLYSTICHUM (Dryopteridaceae)
A fine group of ferns more broad than tall. Most are lime tolerant, many indeed need lime to reach their full potential, and most will take some sun. Thank you to Joan Loraine (Greencombe) for allowing us to collect spores and fronds from her wonderful National Collection of Polystichum over the last few years. 
Polystichum acrostichoides The North American Christmas fern has long evergreen dark green cut fronds, good for cutting at Christmastime. Easy in woodsy type conditions. Evergreen. £4.50
Polystichum aculeatum AGM Native hard shield fern with glossy stiff leathery fronds. Tolerant of most soils and happy with some chalk in the soil. Evergreen. £3.50
Polystichum braunii Highly divided glossy fronds. A lovely polystichum. Evergreen. £3.50
Polystichum imbricans (syn P. munitum var imbricans) As in P. munitum except the pinnules are overlapping. A very attractive species. 1 litre deep pots. Evergreen. £4.50
Polystichum makinoi Handsome and neat 2' or so across. Bipinnate glossy deep green fronds. 1 litre deep pots. Evergreen. £4.50
Polystichum munitum AGM The American sword fern. Well known and long cultivated in this country. Easy and very effective.

Polystichum setiferum ‘Caernarvon’ A very good form of ‘Divisilobum’ which is almost flat growing with deeply indented pinnae. Collected near Caernarvon. £4.00

Selaginella braunii Taller growing clubmoss from Asia but naturalized in the southern USA, slowly creeping with fronds in mid green to 18” tall. £4.00

Woodwardia fimbriata Hardy giant chain fern from North America. Fronds tend to go up and outwards not arching over. £4.00
Woodwardia orientalis ssp formosana A collected form from Taiwan with large arching fronds and new young ferns covering the surface. Likely to be hardy in a sheltered spot. £4.00
Woodwardia radicans AGM An enormous fern which needs a very sheltered moist but not stagnant situation. Forms new plantlets from buds on the frond tips. Evergreen. £6.00
